Revisiting Energy Release Rates in Brittle Fracture
نویسندگان
چکیده
We revisit in a 2d setting the notion of energy release rate, which plays a pivotal role in brittle fracture. Through a blow-up method, we extend that notion to crack patterns which are merely closed sets connected to the crack tip. As an application, we demonstrate that, modulo a simple meta-stability principle, a moving crack cannot generically kink while growing continuously in time. This last result settles a longstanding debate in fracture mechanics on the correct criterion for kinking.

Equilibrium and absolute minimal states of Mumford-Shah functionals and brittle fracture propagation
By a combination of geometrical and configurational analysis we study the properties of absolute minimal and equilibrium states of general Mumford-Shah functionals, with applications to models of quasistatic brittle fracture propagation. The main results concern the mathematical relations between physical quantities as energy release rate and energy concentration for 3D cracks with complex shap...
متن کاملSimulation of the Mode I fracture of concrete beam with cohesive models
Crack propagation modeling in quasi-brittle materials such as concrete is essential for improving the reliability and load-bearing capacity assessment. Crack propagation explains many failure characteristics of concrete structures using the fracture mechanics approach. This approach could better explain the softening behavior of concrete structures. A great effort has been made in developing nu...
متن کاملDynamic and Quasi-Static Tensile Properties of Structural S400 Steel
The study of mechanical behavior of the structural steel S400 under quasi- static and dynamic loading has been the subject of this investigation. In oder to obtain different stress - triaxiality conditions the specimens were notched with 1, 1.5, 2 and 3.5 mm notch radius. The results of fractography show as the velocity of tension increases, ductility reduces and a ductile-brittle transition oc...
متن کاملStacking Fault Energy and Microstructural Insight into the Dynamic Deformation of High-Manganese TRIP and TWIP Steels
The dynamic behavior of three high manganese steels with very different stacking faultenergy (SFE) values (4-30 mJ/m2) were studied using high strain rate torsional tests. The hotrolledmicrostructure of the steel with the lowest SFE of 4 mJ/m2 consisted of a duplex mixture ofaustenite and ε-martensite, but those of the other two steels were fully austenitic. The deformedmicrostructures were stu...
متن کاملNumerical investigation of dynamic brittle fracture via gradient damage models
Background: Gradient damage models can be acknowledged as a unified framework of dynamic brittle fracture. As a phase-field approach to fracture, they are gaining popularity over the last few years in the computational mechanics community. This paper concentrates on a better understanding of these models. We will highlight their properties during the initiation and propagation phases of defect ...
